Haikyuu!! Character Design

Image
Hello once again dear readers, For the past couple of months, I have been watching ‘Haikyuu!!’ an anime about a high school volleyball team and their rise to the top! Declan, author of puff pastry crusade recommended this show to me with high praise and I must say it has lived up to the hype. Engaging characters, exciting volleyball games, Haikyuu has it all. But how it pertains to my blog is the way the show uses character design to fill you in on details and tell part of the story. What do I mean by this? Well, the main characters are all on one team that you follow for the entire show. These main characters have lots of opportunities to be developed and face problems throughout the show, but they are also going up against completely new characters every game they play, so how do they make you care about their opponents during these games? They design the important characters to look interesting. The animators are able to draw you in and be curious about certain characters jus...

Body/Clothing Drawing

Image
Hello again and welcome to the penultimate blog post for Character Design-Time, With school going back online after a disastrous holiday break here in Ontario, I have had ample opportunity to sit at my desk for a couple of hours and learn some things about designing characters. I decided to move away from faces and start working on my character’s clothing/bodies. The way I see it, clothing/bodies might be even more important than what their face looks like. I mean it’s the first thing you see right? This site had a great system for drawing poses that I’ve seen before but hadn’t given a second thought. After using this method though, I will definitely be using this every time. You start by drawing essentially a stick figure with notches at all of the joints in your character, and a head shaped like what I made in the last blog post. Something like this - - > Then, you draw the ‘muscles’ of your character, fleshing out the body with how you want it to look. You use pretty rudim...

Face Tutorial

Image
Hello once again,  After a couple weeks of just letting my creativity fly and creating whatever I want, I decided to bring it back to the other main idea of this project, improving my drawing skills. I have always struggled with creating the humanoid face, which I’m sure everyone has, the face is probably the hardest thing to draw on a human, even in front of hands! Between the complex eyes and drawing lips that don’t look like they’re from rue paul’s drag race (unless you are trying for that), the face provides many challenges to the artist, unless you have a good tutorial. I used this youtube video tutorial to improve my drawing skills, it detailed the step-by-step process to draw human faces which I will try to show you, but I would recommend watching the video if you are interested. I have looked at a couple drawing tutorials in the past and they all were pretty similar so I’m going to assume that this is the basic method for drawing realistic faces. First of all, you s...

Lofi Zac-Hop?!?!?

Image
Hello Once Again, I have been diligently plugging away for this project the last couple days for you guys and have created something I’m very proud of. So without further ado… My most recent character… *drum roll* you already know from the title… Lo-fi Zac!!! As I wrote about in my last blog post I wanted to create Zac an avatar for his lofi hip-hop music (which is his 20-time project) and the classic lofi hip-hop avatar is the stream on youtube with the anime girl studying by a window. Zac has a great post on his blog   about this stream and generally about lofi hip-hop. Last week I asked Zac what he thought about a lofi girl version of himself and he loved the idea. I first got to work with just a reference image of the lofi hip-hop girl and looking over at Zac every once in a while. I went with the same pose that the lofi girl is in with the hand under the chin and a hand working at some kind of homework. I decided to have Zac in this same pose with the room behind him h...

Korzaz, Destroyer of Armstrong

Image
Hello Again, As I’m sure you have already heard, I have changed my 20-time project to *drum roll* Character Design! I have decided to do something similar to the second idea I had in the 'What This Blog is About (Part 2)' ’ post where I would learn new styles of drawing characters and then create some of my own characters.  I’ve mostly been designing characters in my own style for now, like this war hammer orc who has killed Neil Armstrong and took his spacesuit on the moon. I got the idea for this character after John told me about his project, painting Warhammer miniatures. He talked about this one set of orcs he created with his friends and referred to them as ‘space orcs’ and that just gave me an instant vision of what I needed to draw. I started by looking up pictures of Warhammer orks   and trying to nail down their key features that I would need to include with the drawing. I found that the big teeth and the snarling expression were definitely something I needed to in...

What Is This Blog About (part 2)

Hello Again, I gotta say I’m struggling to care about this project. I chose something that I thought would align with my interests but I haven’t been able to find reasons to sit down to research and keep this project moving forward. So I wanted to ask you something, what I should do? Should I keep moving and try to create something for my residential Toronto housing project or should I jump ship and try something new? Before you decide, I wanted to run through some of the other ideas I thought of while thinking of a new project. The first idea that I’ve looked a little bit into is the animation process, specifically Anime. I would look into the process that popular Anime studios use to create their show and create either a slide show presentation on the process an Anime show goes through and/or an animation with my own characters. The animation idea would be very fun but very difficult to pull off. I mean just look at the kind of fight scenes these shows feature. I could d...

What Is This Blog About? (Old 20-Time)

Hello! Welcome to my blog, my name is Stephen Cox and this blog will detail the process in which I complete my 20 Time project. You probably want to know what my project is right? Well, I decided to research Toronto architecture from 1921-2021 and then create a model using the different styles over the century and represent the changes architecture has gone through in Toronto over the last 100 years. I arrived at this idea after brainstorming, considering, and getting rid of many ideas while trying to think of what to create. I thought of something design-like because I enjoy design and I wanted to find something fun to do in class. I also wanted to find something that would drive me to do more of the project and doing something you enjoy is a great way to get yourself to do work, at least for me. The basic idea of this project is to find the styles and different materials used in architecture through the time period (1921-2021) and then put them all into a model creating a house...
